Volunteers from across the Lower Mainland are planning a fun and interest-filled day in Surrey B.C. on Saturday August 13th to benefit the children served by Shiloh Place Orphanage (Orphelinat Silo Place) in Lubumbashi, DRC and their local community. Funds raised at the all-ages “Raise the Roof” event will complete a partly-built community centre at Shiloh Place (www.shilohplace.ca ). This building will be a health education centre, an adult skills development site, a place of worship, and a social gathering space for residents of Shiloh Place and the nearby community. Part of the vision of Congolese-Canadian Chantal Kasongo, of Coquitlam, the community centre needs $10,000 to be completed, with supplies and labour to be obtained in Lubumbashi.
On August 13th, from 1pm to 5pm, come to Sullivan Hall, 6306 152 St. Surrey (transit accessible) to enjoy food, all-day music, special children’s entertainment (2 to 4pm), a silent auction, displays, craft sale, etc. At 4pm, hear African drumming by Surrey’s Rhythm Well drummers. Tickets ($25 adults, $12 children and youth under 16) include a light lunch and a drink. Local businesses and friends of Shiloh Place have been generous in donating exciting items for the silent auction, including a painting, books, gift certificates, and gourmet gift baskets.
